Algerian artist Atef Berredjem in residence in Algiers with aria
In association with the Villa Romana and Alya Sebti’s programme ‘Pas de deux : 5 x 2 x 2‘, Atef previously spent a 15-day research residency in Florence together with curator Nora Razian. Now in Algiers, the artist will develop new work curated by Nora and commissioned by aria.
Atef Berredjem on his residency:
I am very excited to take part in a residency programme in my own country and I look forward to spending one month in Algiers to develop new work. I am very honored to be the first Algerian-based artist hosted by aria. In addition to responding to a commission from aria, I am delighted to work alongside such a gifted international curator as Nora Razian. With this experience, I am taking a new step in my career and practice, and I am confident this will lead to further challenging opportunities.
Zineb Sedira on Berredjem’s residency:
I am delighted to invite Atef Berredjem as our 5th artist in residence. Atef will spend time researching and producing new work curated by Nora Razian who will follow up on Atef’s progress and also visit Algiers later this year to foresee the final stage of the work.
With this new component of our programme, we are committed to contribute to the growing Algerian art scene. This will be the first commissioned work for Atef, and for aria the occasion to launch our new programme of commissions to Algeria-based artists.
About artist Atef Berredjem and curator Nora Razian:
Atef Berredjem graduated from the Algiers Fine Arts Academy in 2007. His artistic practice spans painting, assemblage, sculpture, installation, photography and performance. In recent years, his works have focused on immigration and colonization, combining images, objects (readymades), words or sentences with materials and scenography. His Raft of Lampedusa (2009) and Africus (2009) are two installations that evoke, amongst other global issues, that of illegal immigrants.
Atef has shown his work in various collective exhibitions, such as Memory at the Citadelle, Algiers (2005), Catalan Caravan at the French Cultural Centre in Annaba (2008), Casbah/Basket at the District Gallery in Marseilles (2008), Modernity in African Art Today at National Modern and Contemporary Art Museum, Algiers (2009), ARTifariti International Festival in Western Sahara (2009), Exploring paradigms; Female, gender and modernity at MUSAC, Léon and Casa Arabe, Madrid, 2012.
