aria and Villa Arson are thrilled to announce that EL Meya was selected to undertake a 3-month residency followed by a solo exhibition in Nice in March 2021.

EL Meya lives and works in Algiers, Algeria. She graduated from the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts d’Alger. EL Meya is painter whose work addresses the representation of her Mediterranean, North African, and Algerian society in art history. In her paintings, subjects of frontal, generous and polysemous forms evolve in and encounter a plural society.  EL Meya is represented by rhizome gallery, Algiers.

Last year aria (artist residency in algiers) and Villa Arson, Nice (France) have launched a new collaboration dedicated to supporting emerging artists based in Algeria.

This partnership responds to the international shared vision with Villa Arson that aims at strengthening artistic links and creative exchanges with Mediterranean-rim countries. In tune with the collaborative spirit of aria, the first iteration of this programme will focus on Algeria and take place at Villa Arson in 2021.

EL Meya will be in residency for 3 months at the Villa Arson starting from March 2021. This residency will culminate with a solo exhibition in the Galerie Carrée of the Villa Arson Contemporary Art Center opening on 12 June 2021.

French-Algerian artist Fayçal Baghriche, a Villa Arson alumnus, will curate EL Meya’s solo exhibition.

Residency: March-May 2021
Exhibition, Galerie Carrée: 12 June – 19 September 2021
Curator: Fayçal Baghriche
