Alfredo Jaar explores Algiers. aria officially launches the
residency programme in Algiers
aria’s pilot programme is scheduled to end this year on a high note with the residency of artist, architect, and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar. The New York-based artist will visit Algiers from 15th November to 21st November 2012.
In association with aria, the Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) will host a talk in London by Alfredo Jaar upon his return from Algiers, on 22nd November 2012, as part of their Significant Voices series.
Alfredo Jaar on his reconnaissance trip to Algiers:
I am delighted to visit Algiers. This will be my first visit to North Africa. I will explore the city and will immerse myself in Algerian culture. My methodology consists in researching a place in depth through explorations of the city, readings, conversations, interviews, workshops, analysis of the local press, television, theater, films, visual arts. My objective is to discover what I call the “essence” of a place. I reach that critical moment after a long process of accumulation of information. Only then I find myself ready to articulate some ideas about a place, and perhaps create a work. All my work is a creative response to a place, it is site-specific and unique to that place. I am ready to get lost in Algiers and search
for its “essence”. I am grateful to aria for this extraordinary opportunity.
Alfredo Jaar will take advantage of his stay in Algiers to address students at the École des Beaux-Arts d’Alger as part of professor and curator Nadira Laggoune’s visual arts seminar.
Zineb Sedira on Jaar’s residency:
I am thrilled to end this year’s successful pilot programme with such wonderful artist and colleague, Alfredo Jaar. Known for his talent in questioning and addressing underrepresented socio-political issues, Alfredo will be a singular voice in Algiers and bring a distinct outlook on Algerian society.
Alfredo Jaar’s residency will be followed by the official launch in London of aria under its new logo and identity, and the announcement of the names of next year’s artists-in-residence.
Founded by artist Zineb Sedira earlier this year, aria hosted artist-in-residence Nicene Kossentini from Tunisia and Basel El Maquosui from Gaza (in partnership with Art School Palestine and UNESCO office Ramallah), as part of its one-year pilot programme. The programme aims at building cross-border dialogues and creating an ongoing dynamic network in diverse international art communities within and beyond Algeria. It provides opportunities for emerging and established artists from North Africa and across the world to conduct artistic and cultural research and production.

Important individual exhibitions include The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, Whitechapel, London, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
