aria is celebrating the successes of its 2012 pilot programme. The positive responses to aria in Algeria and internationally have been encouraging. We would like to share our 2013 programme with you, and speculate on the projects that await us.

 

Launching aria 2013’s programme with Mohamed Bourouissa

aria is thrilled to launch its programme this year inviting Franco-Algerian visual artist Mohamed Bourouissa in Algiers.
Bourouissa will develop a research on Frantz Fanon and his practice as a psychiatrist in the city of Blida. Read the press release here.

Announcing aria 2013’s artists-in-residence

Atef Berredjem (lives and works in Annaba, Algeria): in association with Villa Romana (Italy) and Alya Sebti, Artistic Director of the Marrakesh Biennial (Morocco), Atef will spend 2 weeks in Florence this summer to work alongside Nora Razian, curator of public programmes at Tate (UK) and co-founder of Batroun Projects (Lebanon). He will then be in residence with aria in Algiers for one month in September 2013 working on a new piece commissioned by Razian.

Kapwani Kiwanga (lives in Paris, France and works between Paris and Tanzania): Kapwani will in be residence in Algiers in November 2013.

Younès Rahmoun (lives and works in Tetouan, Morocco): Younès will be in Algiers at the Beginning of 2014.

aria’s collaborations

1:54, a new art fair dedicated to contemporary art in Africa selected aria to curate a project space during the event which will take place at Somerset House from 16th to 20th October 2013. More soon.

aria was invited to participate in this year Venice Agendas, a series of breakfast events and performances during the preview week of the 55th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. Yasmina Reggad participated in the panel discussion ‘Emerging scenes, educational institutions and residencies’ alongside Antonia Carver (Dubai), Bérénice Saliou (France), Fabio Achilli (Italy), Georg Schöllhammer (Austria), Kathrin Becker (Germany), Stefanie James (UK) and Marina Fokidis (Greece).

– Since fall 2012, Alya Sebti (Artistic Director, Marrakesh Biennial) is guest-curating a six-quarter cycle of ArteEast Virtual Gallery that spotlights artists from the Maghreb, and leads up to the 2013 edition of the Marrakesh Biennial which asks the question, “Where are we now?”.
The Spring 2013 Edition of the gallery is guest-curated by Yasmina Reggad for aria and features the essay The Economy of Hope [working title] which discusses works by artists Amina Menia and Mohamed Bourouissa. For this issue of Gallery see here.
Following on this successful collaboration, we will present the show at Selma Feriani in Tunisia in April 2014.

– Algerian artist Sofiane Zouggar was a guest artist-in-residence in February-March 2013 at Villa Romana (Florence) in association with aria.
